The New Target

The episode begins with the two guards, at Konoha’s gate, talking about whether or not to take it easy. While they are arguing a dog starts chasing a cat in front of them. As the two ninja end their argument, a monstrous roar frightens the dog from chasing the cat. As the dog looks up it sees a shadowy figure riding a large animal. The person tells the dog it shouldn’t be picking on the weak. Elsewhere Shikamaru is just waking right before his alarm clock goes off. As he sits there, with his alarm still ringing, he tries to decide whether or not to turn it off. Thinking that he doesn’t feel like getting up to turn it off, but it is annoying to listen. A short clip of a person eating is then shown as they ask for more food.

Back at the gate, the guards notice something headed towards the gate and look to see Gai running with a limp Kakashi on his back. The guards can only stare as Gai stops in front of them saying he is first. Shortly after Lee arrives behind Gai saying he is second. The guards wonder why the two are racing while Gai informs Lee he wasn’t second, but third since Gai was caring Kakashi. Gai tells a limp Kakashi he is a lucky guy while Lee writes something in a notebook while saying Gai just gave him an important tip.
Naruto, Sakura, Neji, and Tenten are shown at the gate. Neji wonders why the two are in an inappropriate mood and Tenten says he got into the race, to which Neji quickly tells her to not be ridiculous. Gai notices everyone is there and suggests they go report to Tsunade. Sakura reminds Gai about Kakashi’s condition and Gai changes his mind and decides they should take Kakashi to the hospital.

At the hospital Kakashi wakes up to find everyone gathered around him. As he realizes where he is, Tsunade, and Shizune, walks in saying Kakashi did a good job. Kakashi tries to sit up, with the sheet almost falling off his unmasked face, but cannot because he is too weak. Naruto then tries to look to see what Kakashi looks like without a mask while Tsunade comments about how Kakashi will be away from missions for a little while since he isn’t used to his new Sharingan. This gets Naruto a nasty look from Sakura. Tsunade tells Team Gai to rest and starts leave, but Sakura runs after her to talk to her.

Outside Tsunade asks if Sakura has talked to Kakashi and Naruto about what they are about to talk about. Sakura tells her she couldn’t talk to Kakashi because he was semi-conscious and she wanted to talk to Tsunade first before she talked to Naruto. Tsunade, Sakura and Shizune are shown on a balcony of the Hokage office, while Sakura tells Tsunade what Sasori told her about meeting with his spy. Tsunade wonders if they can really believe him and Sakura tells her they can. Tsunade then bring up that it may be a trap laid by Akatsuki to capture Naruto. Sakura tells her if it is a trap then they will spring it. Tsunade reminds Sakura that Kakashi will be out for a week and they only have six days till the meeting is supposed to happen and they were already short on member without Sasuke.

Tsunade says they have no choice to recruit new members for Team Kakashi. Shizune interjects saying they should send a team to check out the situation around the meeting point and even if she allows Sakura to go, they shouldn’t allow Naruto to go. Sakura is speechless at this and Tsunade tells her and Shizune that they are among the few shinobi she can truly trust and she will be sending Team Kakashi on the mission. Shizune says it is the same as sending out her team, but Tsunade tells her it isn’t since Sakura and Naruto are pursuing their comrade and have a high chance and succeeding since they want to save Sasuke badly. Tsunade then tells Shizune that is where she and Sakura are different. Shizune understands, but says they should take Naruto off the team. Tsunade then asks her what Naruto what think if he were to hear this, while looking up at the top of the Hokage office and talking a little louder then normal.

Before Shizune can say anything else Naruto, who is shown on the roof behind Sakura and Shizune, says they have to find new teammates, shocking Shizune and Sakura. Tsunade laughs at this while Naruto jumps down and lands on the handrail beside her, then jumps off again. Tsunade says Naruto is to hasty since they didn’t even finish talking. While Shizune and Sakura watch Naruto head into the village a flashback is shown of Tsunade talking about Naruto having the ability to make people want to bet their hopes on him. Another is shown of an unconscious Naruto, after Tsunade saved him from Orochimaru, as Naruto is heard saying being Hokage is his dream. Back in the present Shizune thinks about how Naruto may not be normal after all.

In the village a familiar looking hooded figure is shown leaning against a tree when Naruto walks past him, thinking about who would be good person to be on the team. The figure steps out from the shadow of the tree and tells Naruto it has been a long time. Naruto asks him who he is and person tells him “It’s me”, which really doesn’t help Naruto out much. Naruto runs up to him and stares at him for a few seconds then sees a bug fly out from person’s jacket. He backs away like he realizes who the person is, but is still clueless. The person then tells Naruto he should remember his comrades, because f he doesn’t and they call out to him, then he could hurt their feelings. Naruto recognizes the person’s annoying way of talking and reveals it to be Shino. Shino says Naruto finally remembered, but Naruto fires back that it is hard to recognize him with his face covered up.

When Naruto gets done saying this, Kiba arrives riding a large dog. Kiba tells Shino that he is early then notices Naruto standing nearby. He runs up and smells Naruto and says it is definitely him, to which Naruto comments about how Kiba recognized him. The dog barks and Naruto stares in disbelief and starts to ask if the dog is Akamaru, but Kiba cuts him off saying of course it is. Kiba says Naruto got pretty tall, but Naruto says forget him and to look at Akamaru and asks him dogs grow that big in short amount of time. Kiba tells him he didn’t notice since he has been around Akamaru all time. Naruto asks him how he couldn’t notice, seeing as how Akamaru used to ride on Kiba’s head. Naruto asks if Shino remembers, but Shino is sulking because Naruto recognized Kiba easily, but not him.

A small gasp is heard and Naruto turns to see nothing but an empty street. Around the corner Hinata is wondering how she should great Naruto. Before she can even move though, Naruto comes around the corner and asks what’s wrong with Hinata and why is she hiding. Hinata faints as Naruto is wondering what is wrong with her and Kiba asks why she always passes out when she sees Naruto. As a passed out Hinata is waking up and wondering what happened, Naruto is asking for Shino or Kiba to join his team. Kiba tells him he came at a bad time since they all have a mission with Kurenai. Naruto isn’t discouraged saying they have Akamaru and he only needs on person. Kiba tells him it is impossible since he and Akamaru work together. Naruto realizes this and starts to ask Shino, but Shino is sulking even more, since Naruto recognizes Hinata quickly as well. Naruto then turns to a semi-awake Hinata and tells her to shut up and go with him. Hinata takes this the wrong way and passes out again, much to Naruto’s dismay. Naruto is then shown walking down the street wondering who’s left to ask to join his team, while Kiba tries to wake up Hinata and Shino stares at the sky.

Shikamaru is shown telling Naruto, that even though it is troublesome, he is a Chuunin Exam examiner. He then says that he would like to help Naruto, but he cannot act on his own and that if he backed out now, who knows what Tsunade would say. Seeing as how he gets scolded enough by his mother. Naruto begins to pout, but Shikamaru tells him his hands are tied. A familiar voice says he will help out Naruto. Naruto and Shikamaru turn to see Chouji who looks a lot like his father. Shikamaru asks if it is okay since Chouji has a mission with Ino and Asuma, but Chouji tells him he can’t abandon Naruto after hearing Naruto’s dilemma and he will talk to Asuma. Naruto thanks Chouji and Shikamaru tells him that talking to Asuma won’t do a thing since Tsunade is in charge.

A figure is shown pulling out a paint brush while Chouji says it won’t hurt to try and hands over Shikamaru’s lunch, which Naruto takes it. As Shikamaru tells Naruto the lunch is for him, not Naruto, the figure is shown unrolling a scroll and pulling out some ink from the wooden part of the scroll. Naruto comments about Chouji eating a lot like the old days and is about to call him a fatass when Chouji gets an angry look on his face as Shikamaru knocks Naruto to the ground. Chouji begins to throw a punch when Naruto notices a drawing of a lion coming at them. Chouji hits it and it explodes into ink. As the ink splatters the ground another one jumps off the nearby room and as Naruto warns Shikamaru, Chouji grabs it and crushes it with an enlarged hand.

The trio then notice who caused all this, the guy is Sai from the previous episode who’s holding up a paintbrush looking at them. Naruto comments about not seeing him before, but he has a leaf on his forehead protector. Shikamaru tells him that though they are not sure what he is after they should capture him and hand him over to the interrogation squad, while he does his Shadow Possession jutsu. Sai quickly paints more lions while Shikamaru tells him that he and Chouji will back him up and to go. Naruto heads towards Sai as Sai performs a jutsu that brings the lions off the paper and to life. Naruto stops and watches as 6 lions head towards him, then the episode ends.
