The Bridge of Heaven and Earth

After transforming into Hiruko, Yamato takes a few attempts at nailing his voice before Sakura catches a perfect impersonation. He’s unable to imitate Hiruko’s brash attitude and low tolerance for lateness. When that is solved, the squad heads off towards the bridge. Yamato gets into position while Sakura, Sai, and Naruto take their place behind some shrubs and rocks. In the distance, Sai spots the approaching informant.

As the informant waits, Yamato approaches and the informant feels comfortable enough to pull down his robe. As a shock to all but Sai, the informant is none other than Yakushi Kabuto, better known as Orochimaru’s right hand man and someone that Naruto and Sakura would never have thought to be the Akatsuki spy. Yamato begins asking a few questions, but since Kabuto could be followed or traced, the Q and A session will have to be brief.

He asks where Orochimaru and Uchiha Sasuke currently are, but Kabuto explains that Orochimaru has more than one hidden base because he is constantly changing location to keep intruders at bay. Right now he and Sasuke are on an island near a northern lake, but will relocate in three days.

Unknown to all, hidden in the trees, watching the entire spectacle take place, Orochimaru waits in silence.

Kabuto turns the conversation around and begins questioning Yamato, but Yamato knows that if the two keep talking, his cover will be discovered. Kabuto mentions one of the bodies Orochimaru used to transfer out of and how it had protective wards, so he couldn’t receive the cell specimens that Yamato wanted.

With all said that needed to be said, Yamato prepares to go on the offensive, but is interrupted when Orochimaru breaks into the conversation. At first, it seems that Kabuto got the wrong impression of why Yamato drew his kunai, but at least the disguise was not blown. Yamato is at a disadvantage; he knows that even if he and Kabuto attacked Orochimaru together, they would not have a high chance of defeating him.

Yamato’s fighting style is different from Sasori’s and he can’t call out the rest of the team because that would arouse suspicion. Kabuto makes the first move by forming a chakra scalpel and splitting Yamato’s disguise. Yamato retreats, but Orochimaru grabs him with Sen’ei Tajashu and sends countless snakes to bring him back to the bridge. He ends up grabbing a wood replacement.

Kabuto has never seen Sasori’s real body, so Orochimaru has to explain the entire matter to him. Kabuto may have been Sasori’s spy for so long, but he never saw his real form. He was supposed to be under one of Sasori’s spells, but Orochimaru dispelled that technique awhile ago and Kabuto is obviously on the Sound’s side.

Before the battle can begin, Orochimaru asks Yamato to call out Naruto, Sakura, and Sai, since he knows that they were hiding back there. Of course, Naruto is not at all happy to see Orochimaru, who now wonders which of the two has gotten stronger: Naruto or Sasuke?
