Sprinting Kankuro

On the outskirts of the village, Deidara nearly avoids a swipe from one of Sasori’s weapons, since he had told Deidara not to keep him waiting and to prepare himself for an opponent such as Gaara. The two head off, with Sasori muttering that he’ll never come back to Suna again.

Elsewhere, Kankuro and some other shinobi arrive at the outskirts of the village when Kankuro realizes that the squad that was stationed there, the one led by Yuura, should have taken on the enemy upon seeing them, but now he can’t hear a thing. They find that all of the shinobi have been killed. Kankuro tries not to believe that there’s a traitor amongst him and begins to head off when one of the shinobi begins to wake up. Someone goes to help him, but there’s an explosive note on the shinobi that immediately detonates, causing a chain reaction of explosions.

Naruto enters his home, which has seen better days since he’s been away for so long. Frankly, it could use a good scrubbing down, but before Naruto can do any complaining, he finds a photo of Team 7…when they were all together. Naruto hasn’t forgotten his promise yet.

From beneath the rubble, Kankuro was only able to save two of the shinobi who now require medical attention. He himself is going to head off to catch the Akatsuki members. It’s pretty obvious that he’ll battle them if he has to, but he is taking a great risk. Kankuro finds that there are multiple trails and footprints in the ground, but he’s able to follow Sasori and Deidara because of Gaara, who has had sand falling off of him this entire time.

Baki orders that a squad be sent to follow Kankuro and that a message be sent to Konoha to inform them of the emergency situation.

In Konoha, Kakashi prepares to get some sleep after reading Icha Icha Tactics twice, but it’s already morning and he didn’t make the lists of new teams.

Temari and Shikamaru are also up a bit earlier than most are, but it’s because she must get back to her village and he is still her guide for the remainder of time she’s in Konoha. The next time the two meet will be at the Chuunin Exam. Before leaving, however, Temari tells Shikamaru that he needs to hurry up and become a jounin, which he could do if he’d stop complaining about missions and took them seriously. She leaves him in complete perplexity as she heads off.

While walking, however, she begins picking up the pace when the winds give her a bad vibe.

Kankuro finally catches up to Deidara and Sasori, who orders his blonde comrade to go on ahead. Kankuro opens three scrolls and summons Karasu, Kuroari, and Sanshouo.

Naruto begins to complain about Kakashi’s lack of enthusiasm for their first mission as a team, but as Sakura tells him, Kakashi barely shows any spirit, so why should he now? The messenger bird from Sunagakure arrives.

As Deidara departs, Kankuro sends Karasu after him, but it’s ensnared by Sasori’s tail. He tells Kankuro that the battle will now end.
