Naruto's Growth

So Kisame has trapped Neji, Tenten, and Gai within water barriers for the time and is now holding off Gai, so the two can fight without any interruptions. Samehada returns to its rightful owner because no one else can wield it, which would explain why Gai was cut when he was holding it. Gai pulls out his nunchaku, which, according to the others, means that he must be fighting a powerful enemy. Pakkun can only watch from the sidelines as Kisame charges towards Gai.

Three Kage Bunshins surround Naruto, but he doesn’t falter. He throws a kunai that hits each one, but they dissolve into a large number of crows. They circle in the sky and some come together to reform another Kage Bunshin of Itachi, but how? Naruto didn’t look into Itachi’s eyes, so how could a genjutsu have been cast? It turns out that Itachi doesn’t need to use just his eyes and can cast a genjutsu simply by pointing a finger at his opponent. After all, Itachi did point at Naruto when he and the others ran into him. But never fear. Itachi won’t, or actually, can’t use the Mangekyou Sharingan now, but the reasons for it are not explained.

Naruto thinks back to his training with Jiraiya and how he had asked the Sannin to teach him how to cast genjutsu. Well, first off, Jiraiya is going to show him how to dispel them, but Naruto only wants to learn how to cast them, not release them. Jiraiya explains that genjutsu are techniques that control the chakra flow of your opponent’s mind and give the user control over their five senses. They require a lot of intelligence, so it’s not hard to see that Naruto’s clueless during this explanation. Naruto was never a genjutsu user to begin with. Jiraiya goes on to talk about certain opponents, such as Uchiha Itachi, whose genjutsu can take down even the strongest shinobi around, just like Kakashi. He then explains that when one is caught in a genjutsu, they have to stop their chakra flow. Thanks to Naruto’s training, he’s able to focus the chakra to his feet (he and Jiraiya are currently standing on water) and can stand on water without even thinking about it. The instant Naruto stops the flow of chakra in his feet, he sinks. As soon as the flow is stopped, one must break the hold by redirecting their chakra.

Naruto prepares to do the same now.

On the sidelines of Gai’s battle, Tenten slowly reaches her limit of how much breath she can hold. Kisame uses Suiton: Suikoudan no Jutsu (Water Style: Water Shark Missile) and the shark created soon detonates right before Gai, but he’s fine. Once again, it seems that Gai is about to remember just who he’s fighting, but Kisame doesn’t give a chance to say much this time. Gai receives a hard punch that sends him to the bottom of the water and Kisame follows up with Suiton, Goshoku-zame (Water Style, Five Man-Eating Sharks) to send five chakra created sharks after Gai. He’s attacked on all sides and can barely hold his own, so he does the inevitable: he opens all of the gates up to the Sixth Gate, the View Gate. Using Byakugan, Neji begins searching for a weak spot. When it appears that he’s found one, he uses Hakke Rokujuu Yonshou (Eight Trigrams, Sixty-Four Palms) and destroys not only the water barriers, but the clones of Kisame. The battle between Gai and Kisame can now continue.

At the same time, Naruto stops the flow of chakra and the crows disintegrate. Itachi just stares down at Naruto.
