Puppet Guide

The Puppet Technique was created in order to convert a form of entertainment into a style of combat. The technique utilizes strings of chakra extending from the user's fingers to control a puppet's movements. Those who can effectively use this ability are rare, but once mastered the user can hide in a safe location while his puppet does the work for him. Skilled puppeteers are able to manipulate multiple puppets simultaneously, with Chiyo being able to use each of her ten fingers to control a different puppet. These chakra strings also allow puppeteers to manipulate other people or objects, controlling their movements to help or hinder their progress.

The art of puppetry varies in usage from person to person, as puppets can be equipped with an array of different weapons and tools to make a battle easier. Puppeteers can also combine the abilities of their puppets to increase their effectiveness; Kankuro, for example, can use one of his puppets to capture an enemy while a second bombards them with weapons, killing them. Standard puppets, however, are limited to attacks not dependent on chakra, as soulless beings cannot utilize it. Sasori has created a workaround for this shortcoming by converting the body of a still-living person into a puppet. Because they were once human, these puppets are able to perform jutsu, giving them a drastic advantage over other puppets.
Chiyo:

Chiyo is an advisor to Sunagakure who is introduced at the start of Part II. She is mistrustful of other ninja villages, making treaties as a formality and quietly strengthening Sunagakure's military might simultaneously. During the various Ninja Wars she used her knowledge of poisons to aid Sunagakure, only to have many of her efforts nullified by the work of Tsunade. She is a skilled puppeteer and taught her grandson, Sasori, everything she knew. When Sasori kidnaps Gaara, the leader of Sunagakure, in Part II, Chiyo joins a group of Konohagakure ninja in rescuing him. With the help of Sakura Haruno, the apprentice of Tsunade, Chiyo is able to kill her grandson. Despite their efforts, Gaara dies before they can get to him. Touched by the genuine bond that has been formed between Sunagakure and Konoha, Chiyo gives up her life to revive Gaara, hoping that the relationship of peace might be continued.
Kankuro:

Kankuro  is the second oldest of the three siblings. For the first half of the series he is frequently at odds with his younger brother, Gaara, though he tends to hold his tongue for fear of being killed. In Part II, once Gaara begins to reveal his dreams and motivations to Kankuro, Kankuro becomes very protective of Gaara; he lashes out at anyone who speaks poorly of Gaara and readily risks his life to save Gaara when he is kidnapped. Kankuro is a talented puppeteer, and has thus far been shown to have three puppets in his arsenal: Karasu, Kuroari , and Sanshōuo. Karasu is used for offensive purposes, Kuroari traps opponents in its body to make them easier targets, and Sanshōuo protects Kankuro and his allies from enemy attacks. The puppets are all destroyed by their original creator, Sasori, in Part II, and it has yet to be seen whether Kankuro has repaired them.
Sasori:

Sasori is a former ninja of Sunagakure. His parents died when he was young, leaving him in the care of his grandmother, Chiyo. Lacking the love of parents, Sasori left Sunagakure when he got older and joined Akatsuki where he is initially partnered with Orochimaru. After Orochimaru's defection he Sasori teamed with Deidara, who looks to him and his artistic knowledge with reverence. Before leaving Sunagakure, Sasori was taught the art of puppetry by his grandmother, which he refined to fit his needs over the years. He eventually devised a way to convert the corpses of humans into puppets, allowing him to use any of the ninja abilities they possessed during their life for himself. In time he even converted his own body into a puppet, which gives him eternal life and allows him to control hundreds of puppets at once. Each weapon in his puppets' extended arsenal is laced with a poison of Sasori's design that causes extreme pain to the inflicted until they die. Sakura Haruno is able to create an antidote for Sasori's poison, allowing her and Chiyo to fight him uninhibited. They eventually destroy his heart, the only part of his humanity he kept when converting himself to a puppet, resulting in his death.
The Puppets:
Hiruko:

Hiruko was once a great shinobi of the Sand Village. However, once he died, he became one of Sasori's first human puppets and one of his favorites. As a puppet, he serves as Sasori's "puppet armor" as he can hide inside of him. Chiyo states that Hiruko has changed since she saw him 20 years ago and indicates to Sakura that he has increased his overall defense with the shell he has on his back as well as a new arm-type addition. He contains several dangerous needle type attacks and a large scorpion tail. When Sakura and Chiyo charge at him, he removes his facemask, and launches a constant blast of needles from his mouth, similar to a machinegun. When that fails, he fires a strange cylinder shaped arm attachment, which is fired like a torpedo, ripping through the earth. Then it splits into hundreds of small wooden sticks, which each split into 10 needles, flying in all directions. When this attack fails, he tries to kill Sakura with his tail, but Chiyo stops his tail, allowing Sakura to destroy the puppet.
Performance of the Hundred Puppets:

Sasori removes one summoning scroll from his back. He then opens his right chest compartment to emit one hundred chakra strings, which reach into the scrolls. From the scrolls, one hundred human puppets emerge, each one a defeated and converted opponent of Sasori. Sasori claims that he brought down an entire country with this jutsu. When in battle against his grandmother, Chiyo and Sakura, many of these puppets were destroyed, however many had managed to destroy some of the puppets Chiyo used.
Ten Puppet Collection of Chikamatsu:

Despite the puppets association with Chiyo as the name indicates she did not create this technique. As told by Sasori the technique and the puppets were the masterpiece collection created by Monzaemon Chikamatsu the founder of the Puppet Technique and it can be assumed that the symbol on each of the puppets is his crest. One advantage that the ten puppets had over Sasori's hundred puppets is that they were designed to operate in tandem and in combination, as opposed to individual puppets merely operated at the same time. Donned in white coats, each of the puppets have different sets of skills and weapons. The 10 puppets' and their skills are listed below.
Karasu:

The first of Kankuro's puppets to make an appearance, Karasu resembles a three-eyed, four-armed humanoid. In Part I, Kankuro typically keeps Karasu wrapped in bandages on his back, and he is able to switch places with it at will using a technique similar to the Body Replacement Technique. Because of Kankuro's enjoyment in installing mechanisms into his puppets, Karasu is very offensive, having numerous concealed weapons, including poison-tipped darts, kunai, blades and a huge poisoned needle concealed within its head. Karasu has also on occassion released smokescreens in order to blind its opponents. The smokescreens can be made up of poisonous gas to serve a secondary purpose. Karasu is also able to detatch any of its body parts for separate attacks.
Kuroari:

The second of Kankuro's puppets to make an appearance, Kuroari has a much longer head than Karasu and sports two red devil-like horns and six arms. Kankuro can use the same type of Body Replacement Technique on Kuroari that he does Karasu. While Kuroari does not contain as many hidden weapons as Karasu, each of its arm segments contain a hidden saw-blade which can be used to inflict large slicing wounds to opponents. Kuroari has also been shown to conceal a large number of poisoned needles within its frame. Kuroari's primary function is to trap opponents within itself while weapons enter the slots along its body to puncture the opponent. Like Karasu, Kuroari is able to detach any of its body parts for separate attacks.
Sandaime Kazekage:

The Third Kazekage was once the leader of Sunagakure. He had the unique ability to manipulate his chakra in to magnetic forces allowing him to control Iron Sand. Under mysterious circumstances the Third Kazekage disappeared before a war broke out. When Sakura and Chiyo met up with Sasori during the Rescue the Kazekage arc Sasori revealed that he had taken the Third Kazekage's and turned him into one of his Human Puppets. Sasori used the Iron Sand to fight against them. The Kazekage's puppet could disable other puppets, smash foes with hundreds of arms, slice with several brutal weapons, or impale with Iron Sand blades hovering above the ground that impaled the victim.
Sasori:

Sasori, Although Sasori is in at least his thirties, he maintains the appearance of a teenage boy. Sasori's unnaturally young appearance is a product of his design: most of his body is actually a puppet. In place of his stomach is a thick cable coiled around a pole, allowing Sasori to use it as a stinger and retract it as necessary. Attached to his back is a scroll holder, which Sasori uses to store his human puppets. Sasori also added a pair of arms to his back, each equipped with five large claws, as well as flamethrowers to each of his hands. Installed in his right chest is a mechanism that can spin numerous chakra strings, allowing Sasori to control hundreds of puppets at once and giving him a drastic advantage over all other puppeteers. Sasori's left chest holds the only part of him still human and thus capable of controlling chakra, a cylinder-shaped device containing his heart. Written on the cylinder is the kanji for "scorpion".
Sasori's Father and Mother:

A young Sasori made his dead parents into puppets as a measure of comfort after the death of both of them. These puppets would be modified over time by his grandmother Chiyo, who would add more weapons and abilities to her puppet-form son and wife. They were used later in Chiyo's battler against Sasori.
Sanshouuo:

Sanshouo is the third of Kankuro's puppets to make an appearance. Unlike Kankuro's other puppets, Sanshouo stays true to its name and resembles a salamander. Its abilities are unseen in the manga, but in the anime, Sanshouo is shown to have incredible defensive power. It has a frill that swings up to defend against attacks from the front, and a hollow body Kankuro and up to two other people can take cover in to defend against attacks coming from other directions. It can also spit fire in video games.
