Making an Unnecessary Addition

Tsunade gives “Yamato” his assignment as Kakashi’s temporary replacement. After a short briefing, he leaves. Yamato meets the group and Naruto glares at Sai. Sakura asks Naruto if he knows who Sai is. Naruto explains that he was attacked while he was with Shikamaru’s team earlier.

Sakura quickly turns to look at Sai angrily as well and Naruto draws a kunai. Sai puts one hand on his sword and Yamato looks them over before telling Naruto to stop. Naruto seems to notice Yamato for the first time and he asks who he is. Yamato introduces himself and explains that he is the replacement while Kakashi is in the hospital.

Yamato tells them that since they are on the same team, it will cause problems if they don’t get along. Naruto points at Sai in confusion about him them being on the same team. Sai removes the serious look from his face and smiles while apologizing about before. Sai says he only wanted to know who strong Naruto was since they would be on the same team.

Naruto calms down and puts away his kunai as he comments that Sai did not have to go that far. Sai continues to say that he found out that Naruto is useless among other things. Naruto freezes and then Sakura is forced to restrain him to stop him from attacking. Sakura tells Naruto to calm down and tells Sai that he is being a jerk and everyone will hate him.

Sai answers that he likes ugly girls like her and smiles. Sakura freezes and then Yamato grabs her to stop her leaping on Sai. He tells her to remember what she just said to Naruto. At a hospital, Kakashi sleeps in his bed with one eye open. The window opens and Jiraiya comments that Kakashi looks pretty laid-back. Kakashi greets him and Jiraiya adds that Kakashi has always been like that.

They talk for a while and Kakashi tries to sit up but stiffens from the pain. Jiraiya helps him and says he shouldn’t force himself. After a short look, Jiraiya agrees that Kakashi will not be going anywhere for a while. Jiraiya gives Kakashi two volumes of Make Out Paradise as a gift to pass the time. Then they settle down to wait for Tsunade and Yamato.

Yamato asks the 3 to introduce themselves since they won’t have much time to do it on the mission. Grudgingly, Naruto and Sakura give their names and Sai tells them his. Yamato then explains the mission and how it will help to gather info on Orochimaru and Sasuke. Yamato then says they are to meet at the Village Gate in one hour.

Naruto and Sakura walk together and discuss all the ways that they dislike Sai. They compare him to Sasuke and Naruto carefully says he thinks Sasuke is way better than Sai. Sakura smiles as Naruto carries on about how bad Sai is. Elsewhere, Sai packs his bag for the mission. His room is full of hand-drawn pictures and as he finishes, he picks up a small book. He stares at it for a minute then sees a blade slashing down and blocks with his own.

A member of ANBU Root stands before him. The person hands Sai an envelope containing his secret mission from Danzou. Sai looks it over and his eyes widen. The ANBU notices the book on the table and comments that Sai still carries it around. He and Sai converse about how in Root they have no emotions. The ANBU leaves and Sai stares at the open window.

Outside the hospital, Tsunade and Shizune wait patiently. They hear a noise and Yamato appears and apologizes for being late. They go into Kakashi’s room and after some short greetings, they explain to Yamato specifically why he was chosen as the replacement. Yamato asks if it concerns Naruto and Kakashi nods.

While Kakashi explains, Naruto finishes packing for the mission. Kakashi and Jiraiya tell of how the chakra of the Nine Tails flows around Naruto’s body and takes on the Demon Fox’s form. They continue saying they have called it the Demon Fox’s Cloak. Yamato turns to Kakashi and asks if it happens frequently to which Kakashi points out that it happened in the last mission.

After a short flashback of Naruto’s transformation into the Two Tail Form, Kakashi continues saying that it is likely that more and more tails would appear until all nine were present. Kakashi asks Jiraiya how many he has ever seen. Jiraiya does not answer immediately.

Instead, Jiraiya begins to take off his shirts as he explains that he has only come close to death twice. The first case was when Tsunade beat him for peeking at hot springs. The other time, and at this point Jiraiya removes his last shirt, was when he was training Naruto and the Four Tail Form emerged. The others watch as Jiraiya removes the shirt fully and Yamato’s eyes widen. On Jiraiya’s chest is a large and terrible scar.

Sakura finishes preparing her bag. After fixing her hair and her headband she leaves home and runs off. Tsunade and Shizune are about to go back to Tsunade’s office when Sakura runs up to them. She asks to discuss something with Tsunade, who says she also has something to say.

Inside the office, Sakura tells Tsunade about how Sai and Naruto are acting. Tsunade says it figures and Sakura has a sheepish smile. Tsunade asks Sakura to keep Naruto under control and Sakura says she tries. They are interrupted by a knock at the door. Danzou enters the room and asks Tsunade if she has chosen a capable ANBU as the new team leader.

He goes on to say that he hopes that the leader is not against confrontation or tainted by the Third Hokage. Tsunade struggles to remain calm as Danzou also says that her grandfather tainted the Third. After some more comments that he is reassured, Danzou leaves the room.

Tsunade explains that Danzou fought with the Third for the position of Hokage. He was always for basing decisions on harsh, cold logic. She adds that since she is the granddaughter of the First Hokage, and a supporter of the Third’s policies, Danzou cannot stand her either.

Shizune interrupts them and says it is almost time. Sakura remembers her mission and after saying goodbye, runs out of the room. Naruto looks at a photo of him and Sasuke with Kakashi and Sakura back when they were in Group 7. He thinks that by succeeding in this mission they will get one step closer to saving Sasuke.

Naruto puts down the photo and then leaves the room. At the Village Gate, the three gather with Yamato. No one speaks but some birds fly overhead and everyone turns to watch. Finally, Yamato turns and says that Team Kakashi will leave now. He starts walking and the others follow.
