Shurkien pierce Naruto’s body left and right, but this is nothing
compared to what happens next during the genjutsu: the right half of
Naruto’s face peels off. As his face peels, Naruto can faintly hear
Sasuke calling out his name. Eventually, the entire right side of
Naruto’s face peels off and is replaced with Sasuke’s face (in his
second level curse seal form). This causes Naruto not only to lose
focus, but his right arm begins to strangle him, as if Sasuke has taken
over the right side of Naruto’s body. He tells Naruto that he should
have killed him back at their battle at the Valley of the End and
declares that he’ll end it now. It doesn’t end there; Naruto’s jacket
bursts open, revealing Sakura. With a dark gaze in her eyes, she
repeatedly asks why Naruto, after she had confided in him, failed to
bring Sasuke back. Naruto’s left shoulder is replaced by Kakashi, who
calmly tells Naruto that even though Kakashi had so much faith in, he
let him down because he’s failed to protect his friends.
As
if this wasn’t bad enough, Naruto hears Gaara’s voice. In the palm of
his left hand, Gaara’s eye and symbol appears. He talks of how Naruto
was the only one who was special to others and got to be happy.
Naruto
continues to tell himself that this is a genjutsu, but damn it, it
feels so real. Tears slowly begin to flow down his eyes as he tries to
regain control of his chakra flow.
Let’s flash back to Naruto’s
training with Jiraiya. Even though Naruto understands that he has to
stop his chakra flow, he doesn’t know what to do if that doesn’t work.
He could be in serious trouble if he couldn’t get control of his chakra
and the genjutsu just continued. Jiraiya thinks about it before simply
telling that “Giving up is all you can do.” There is a chance, however,
if Naruto’s teammates are there to touch his body and channel their
chakra into his body. This, in turn, disrupts the flow of Naruto’s
chakra and dispels the genjutsu.
The torture goes on and on
until the genjutsu is broken when Sakura and Chiyo channel their chakra
into Naruto’s body. Now back to normal, Naruto asks the others what
happened to Itachi’s Kage Bunshin, but apparently, there never was one.
Sakura tells him that he just rushed in and used Rasengan on an empty
space. So when Naruto did use Rasengan on the Kage Bunshin, he was
already trapped in the genjutsu.
Time for the battle to continue.
Itachi
begins with Katon, Housenka no Jutsu (Fire Style, Phoenix Flower
Jutsu), though Kakashi easily dodges the fireballs. Itachi follows up
with Katon, Goukakyuu no Jutsu (Fire Style, Grand Fireball Jutsu). When
the smoke from the explosion clears, Kakashi rushes forward with
Raikiri (Lightning Blade, or just Chidori), but Itachi evades it by
jumping into the air. He’s ambushed by another Rasengan from Naruto,
but he doesn’t try to dodge it. He takes the attack full on, but Kage
Bunshin continues to work wonders. Itachi pauses; he hadn’t seen
Rasengan from Naruto before and notes that it’s an interesting
technique, but it still won’t work on him. For Naruto, trying to team
up with Kakashi to take out Itachi won’t work, so he’ll have to defeat
him with a powerful jutsu.
Mist begins to cloud the area, but
it’s on Kakashi’s part, not Itachi. The others will attack as soon as
the mist lifts. The Hidden Mist technique, as it is called, is a good
choice of attack because it makes genjutsu harder to use. Itachi dodges
the three kunai Kakashi throws and he destroys Kakashi’s Kage Bunshin
with another Goukakyuu no Jutsu. All that’s left is a smoldering
trail…and a hole. Kakashi emerges from the ground, but Itachi dodges
his punch. He counters with his own punch, but it is caught by Kakashi.
As the two stare at one another, Sharingan to Sharingan, Kakashi
notices that something was off with that last Goukakyuu no Jutsu that
Itachi used.
In another genjutsu, Kakashi is…paper thin and is
slowly burning to ashes. While it appears that he’s caught in another
genjutsu, he is not. The real Kakashi comes out from beneath the hole
he dug and Itachi is currently dealing with a Kage Bunshin.
Things
aren’t looking too good for Kisame, who isn’t quick enough to dodge the
powerful kick administered by Gai. With the power of opening six gates,
Gai finishes Kisame off with Asa Kujaku (Morning Peacock) and sends him
towards the ground. The water begins to dry up, meaning that Kisame was
finished off.
Once again flashing back to Naruto’s training with
Jiraiya; Jiraiya tells Naruto that he needs to improve Rasengan. Even
though Naruto believes he’s got Rasengan down packed, Jiraiya tells him
that he isn’t as good as he thinks he is. The first time Naruto used it
on an actual enemy, which was Kabuto during the Legendary Sannin
battle; he was only able to use it successfully because he let Kabuto
stab him so he could get a good grip on his fist. As a result, Naruto
landed a perfect Rasengan on Kabuto because he had a hold on him, but
Naruto isn’t going to let every single enemy stab him in order to land
a Rasengan. Rasengan is an original jutsu created by the Yondaime
Hokage himself, but it is incomplete. Therefore, Naruto has to take
what he knows and improve Rasengan. Thanks to Naruto’s high reserve of
chakra, he can use that to connect easier with Rasengan. It would take
some intense training, but Naruto’s ready to create this all new
powerful technique.
And he does so now when he strikes Itachi
dead on with his new technique: Oodama Rasengan (Great Sphere
Rasengan). This causes a massive explosion unlike no other, but even
though Itachi is going out, he does so with a smile on his face? This
makes Naruto a bit uneasy.
Back to Team Gai, Gai still does not
remember who he was fighting. Strangely enough, he doesn’t have to
because upon inspection of the body, he wasn’t fighting Kisame, but
some other shinobi.
At the same time, Team Kakashi observes what
remains of not Itachi’s body, which confirms Naruto and Kakashi’s
suspicions, but the body of Yuura, the same captain from Suna who had
helped Sasori and Deidara capture Gaara.
