Bonds

A click, then the door opens as Sai faces Yamato, Sakura, and Naruto. It's much to Sai's disappointment that the fake corpse didn't fool Yamato. Naruto seizes Sai and demands to know why he betrayed them, but Sakura interrupts the confrontation by giving Sai back his book. She guesses that Danzou has an important mission involving Orochimaru and that Sai is the middleman, which Sai begins to deny, but Naruto sees through both the lie and fake smile.

So, since Sai has been cornered and his mission is a failure, he admits the truth: he is involved with a plan to destroy Konoha and is expected to help Orochimaru do so. That's part one of the plan; the second involves sending information about Orochimaru back to Danzou. Essentially, he's a spy, but putting himself in great risk to double-cross Orochimaru. Of course, since Orochimaru is expected to turn against Danzou anyway, this measure makes sure that Danzou has the upper hand. The information Sai writes on scrolls transforms into small animals that then flee the hideout and head back to Konoha.

But if this plan becomes a reality, as Sakura predicts, many people will die again just like in the last attack. Sai's response? He doesn't have one- he's just following orders. Whatever happens will happen, as he is merely Danzou's puppet, so nothing will talk him out of this assignment.

However, Sakura thinks differently and asks Sai that if he is as emotionless as he claims, why treasure that picture book? No shinobi, according to her rationale, can throw away their emotions entirely, and if the two people in the book are Sai and his brother, how can he lack emotions when he supposedly felt relief when Sakura gave him back the book? Is it because he doesn't want to give up his image as a little brother? Is the bond he has with his brother that deep?

Yamato confirms what Sai already knows: they read his book and Yamato goes further to explain Sai's training in the Hidden Village of Blood Mist- the same village as Zabuza- to suppress his emotions. Yamato narrates the events of Sai's book and assumes that the ending, which was missing, involved Sai killing his brother, but this isn't the case. The book was a present for Sai's brother, but before Sai could finish the book, his brother died. The last pages were the ones Sai wanted to present, but since his brother died, he can't remember what he was supposed to draw.

Kabuto, at last, arrives at the room, but it's empty.

Outside, Yamato has bound Sai and is keeping him under the watch of his clone for safety measures. Naruto is ready to complete the mission and find Sasuke, but Sai speaks up and tells the team that he spoke with Sasuke. Orochimaru is with Sasuke at all times, so it's suicide to try and attack him head on. Besides, Sasuke has no interest whatsoever in returning to Konoha and doesn't care about his former village anymore, so what's the point in rescuing someone that doesn't want to be rescued?

For Naruto, it's simple. Despite everything that he and Sasuke went through, the fights, arguments, contests, they still became the best of friends. Also, Sasuke, in his own way, acknowledged Naruto more than anyone else. That bond is something that can't be broken no matter what, no matter who Naruto has to fight. If Naruto loses his arms, it's no problem- he'll kick Orochimaru to death. If he loses the legs, he'll bite him to death. If he rips off his mouth, he'll stare him to death. And if his eyes are ripped out, he'll curse him from beyond the grave.

No matter what Naruto has to do, he will take Sasuke back from Orochimaru.
